Narrative
“5.33% and counting: the CPI print that put October back on the table”
Macro
| Headline | Detail | Impact | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Sep CPI Beats on Both Headline and Core — October Hike Odds Surge to 46% | Headline CPI printed 3.7% y/y vs 3.6% consensus (prior 3.4%); both headline and core outpaced expectations. 10Y Treasury yield spiked to near 5.33% before pulling back to ~5.20%. Fed funds futures repriced October hike probability from ~20% pre-print to 46%. | ● Bearish | Schwab / BabyPips |
| Brent Crude Above $106 — Persian Gulf Supply Disruption Sustains Energy Inflation Channel | Brent rose 0.6% to ~$106.30/bbl as Middle East tensions continued to cloud energy shipment recovery from the Persian Gulf. IEA Oil Market Report also released today. Oil above $106 is the primary driver of headline CPI overshoot and the key risk to second-round core inflation pass-through that the Fed and ECB are monitoring. | ● Bearish | Tickmill |
| Cleveland Fed Nowcast Flags Q4 CPI Re-Acceleration to 4.82% Annualized | Cleveland Fed’s real-time nowcast (updated Oct 14) puts Q4 2026 CPI at 4.82% annualized and Q4 Core CPI at 3.02% annualized, well above the Fed’s 2% target and above Q3’s 1.97% PCE pace — reinforcing the case for further tightening. | ● Bearish | Cleveland Fed |
| China PPI Surges 5.0% y/y — Largest Beat vs 4.5% Consensus Since Energy Shock Began | China Sep PPI printed 5.0% y/y vs 4.5% consensus (prior 3.8%), driven by energy and commodity pass-through. CPI came in at 0.9% y/y, below the 1.0% consensus, underscoring the deflationary domestic demand gap even as producer prices surge. Export price inflation could accelerate imported inflation globally. | ● Bearish | TradingEconomics / ADMISI |
| Germany Wholesale Prices Surge 8.7% y/y — Massive Beat vs 7.0% Consensus | Germany September WPI printed 8.7% y/y (consensus 7.0%, prior 6.8%) and 1.9% m/m (consensus 0.4%, prior 0.9%). Signals intensifying pipeline inflation pressure in the eurozone’s largest economy; complicates ECB’s data-dependent hold stance ahead of the Oct 30 meeting. | ● Bearish | BabyPips |
| NY Fed Williams Soft-Pedals 2027 Hikes — But Keeps October Live | Williams signaled additional tightening ‘may not be required in 2027’ even if one more hike in 2026 remains possible — a meaningful shift in forward guidance cadence. Dollar softened ahead of CPI on the comment; post-CPI, the guidance caveat was overwhelmed by the hot print. | ● Neutral | Tickmill / GlobalBankingAndFinance |
| MAS Shocks With Policy Hold — All 10 Reuters-Polled Analysts Expected Tightening | The Monetary Authority of Singapore kept its exchange-rate policy band unchanged, defying a unanimous Reuters analyst consensus for tightening. MAS cited easing growth and inflation trajectory; Singapore Q3 GDP advanced at 5.4% y/y, missing the 6.2% prior and slowing from Q2’s 5.9%. Dovish surprise with regional EM carry implications. | ● Bullish | GlobalBankingAndFinance / Reuters |

What Looks Underpriced
- China PPI at 5.0% y/y — a 160bp beat — is being treated as a local commodity story, but at Brent above $106 the export price transmission channel into US and European goods inflation is open and fast-moving. The market has not priced a second CPI shock driven by imported goods deflation reversing.
- The Cleveland Fed nowcast of Q4 CPI at 4.82% annualized sits in the data today and is being ignored in favor of debating whether October gets 25bp. If that nowcast is directionally correct, November FOMC pricing — currently near zero for a hike — is badly wrong and the 10Y has further to run past today’s 5.33% intraday high.
- Gold dropped $69 on a real-rate shock day while oil rose. That decoupling matters: if energy-driven inflation becomes the dominant narrative, gold’s traditional inflation-hedge bid may stay suppressed even as breakevens rise, leaving the hedge most portfolios assume is running actually dead weight.
- Germany WPI at 8.7% y/y — 170bp above consensus — is a pipeline read for euro-area CPI in Q4. ECB deposit rate is 2.25% and Lagarde today upgraded vigilance language without acting. If the Oct 30 ECB meeting reprices toward a hike, EUR/USD could rally sharply against a DXY that is already pricing aggressive Fed tightening, creating cross-asset dislocations in USD-denominated commodity pricing.
- MAS holding against unanimous tightening consensus signals that at least one significant central bank sees growth deteriorating fast enough to override an inflation overshoot. Singapore Q3 GDP slowed to 5.4% from 5.9% and missed 6.2%. If that growth deceleration is a leading signal for broader EM demand, commodity prices — and the energy inflation channel feeding US CPI — may be closer to a self-correcting peak than the Fed’s current reaction function assumes.
